THE long-awaited Opal card will meet its biggest test to date when the electronic ticketing system is rolled out on the Manly ferry service.
Passengers on the Manly ferry will be able to swap to the new card from Monday, April 8, Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian is expected to announce today.
Passengers are encouraged to sign up to an Opal card with a reduced one-way ferry fare of $7, compared with a regular fare of $7.20 for passengers using paper tickets.
The new ticketing system was soft-launched last December on the Neutral Bay ferry, with 550 cards ordered so far.
But with more than 16,000 people on average using the Manly ferry - or 40 per cent of Sydney Ferries' daily customers - the technology underpinning the card will face its toughest test yet.
Electronic ticketing has been promised since before the 2000 Olympics, but Sydney's version won't be fully rolled out across Sydney Ferries until the end of this year, with the rollout on trains to start in the middle of the year and buses in 2014.
