FORMER New Zealand Labor prime minister Helen Clark says Australia's Labor Party is not incompetent.
Ms Clark was asked at a business leaders forum in Brisbane on Monday if last week's Labor leadership contest was a reflection of incompetence.
"No, it's a struggle for power," she replied.
"It's a struggle for power between government and the opposition and within government.
"Once you get to the top job, a lot of people want that job.
"They may be with your own party. They may be within the opposition."
Ms Clark said leaders were always going to have to defend their position.
"The best form of defence is going on the offence and delivering a very strong program and vision of what you can achieve," she said.
Ms Clark, the UN development program administrator, has steadfastly refused to comment on NZ politics since she left politics.
