ARGENTINE cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio has been named as the new Pope.
The 76-year-old archbishop of Buenos Aires has taken the name Francis and is the first pope to come from the Americas. He greeted the crowds in St Peter's Square about 6.25am AEDT, saying the cardinals appeared to have gone to the end of the earth to find the new leader of the Catholic Church.
The former Cardinal Bergoglio reportedly got the second-most votes after Joseph Ratzinger, the last pope, in the 2005 papal election. He has long specialised in the kind of pastoral work - overseeing churches and priests - that some say is an essential skill for a pope.
