AN out-of-control flying car has destroyed a man's five-year obsession to restore four classic automobiles.

Richard King, of Mooroobool, Cairns, had spent every spare second and cent of his life working on the classic cars, Cairns Post reported.

In a few seconds late on Wednesday night, his prized possessions were destroyed when the out-of-control and airborne car crashed through the side of his garage and hit them.

Mr King and partner Jocelyn Russell admit they are "beyond devastated" by the loss as they surveyed what they believe could be up to $150,000 in damage.

"It's complete and utter shock," Ms Russell said.

"It's still pretty raw. They're his (Richard's) babies

"You put everything into it, your whole heart and soul. It's not just a project, it's a lifestyle."

She said the pair had been awoken by a loud "bang" about 11.30pm and went out to investigate, saw nothing, but called police anyway.

The sight that met them after police arrived and they walked to the side of the shed was nothing they could have imagined.

The red sedan was wedged into the wall at an angle and its back tyres were resting on the fence.

"Last night was pretty full on," she said.

"But this morning, to wake up and seeing it in the cold light of day (was worse)."

Cairns police Senior Constable Russell Parker said it was believed the 65-year-old driver was the sole occupant of the car when it took off from a home down the street at high speed and hit the nature strip of the neighbouring house, launching off some rocks in the front garden and flying into the side of the shed.

He said police were now awaiting the results of a blood test of the driver.

"We do believe there is a strong possibility that alcohol has been a factor," he said.

"We're just thankful no one was hurt."

The driver was transported to Cairns Base Hospital with minor injuries.

A crane was required to remove the car from the shed yesterday for fears the building may collapse if it was towed out.
