'Overheating' forces Qantas plane to land

A QANTAS plane bound for Lord Howe Island has been forced to turn back and land after passengers became ill when a faulty airconditioning system caused it to overheat.

A Qantas spokeswoman says flight QF2260, carrying 30 passengers, landed at Sydney airport around 1.47pm (AEDT) on Monday.

She says the flight crew had called ahead to request medical assistance and the plane was met by ambulance crews on the tarmac.

She could not confirm the temperature inside the cabin, but said it was high enough to cause the plane to turned around.

In a statement, Qantas said two passengers had to be taken to hospital as a result of the incident.

Other passengers and crew were treated for heat exposure at the airport, the airline said.

It said the overheating was caused by a "technical issue with the air-conditioning system".
