HE may be holding the nation?s purse strings come September, but this morning shadow treasurer Joe Hockey woke up to a personal financial crisis: the theft of his wallet.

"I have just had to learn the painful lesson again... Don't leave your wallet in the car even when parked in a driveway #ouch," he tweeted at 8.40am.

"Car broken into overnight, wallet and toll money stolen," he wrote.

Mr Hockey's tweet prompted a joke in response from Channel Nine finance reporter Ross Greenwood: "So long as yr more careful with public finances!" to which Mr Hockley replied "Being part Arab, I only carry cash."
