AUTHORITIES in Palumpa in the Northern Territory have shot dead a 4.8 metre crocodile that was "menacing" local children and had to use a backhoe to load the carcass into a ute.
Locals say the saltwater crocodile, which was captured in a billabong near the Daly River Reserve, had been a problem for two years sometimes preventing children from crossing a local causeway to go to school.
Local police and wildlife officers trapped the large crocodile and shot it near the community which is 240 kilometres south-west of Darwin.
The beast is the second crocodile over four metres long that has been captured in the Territory in the last week alone, the ABC reports.
