A THUG dramatically captured on CCTV brutally punching two women to the ground on a Byron Bay street escaped with a $500 fine.

The disturbing footage shown on Nine's A Current Affair last night highlighted police fears that drunken violence is out of control in the popular northern NSW town.

The assault occurred on Johnson St on May 6, 2012, and involved two women from Broadbeach, Queensland.

The victims had just left a venue when one of them approached a 20-year-old man. An argument erupted and then turned ugly, with both of the women assaulted.

They were beaten and flung to the ground as shocked witnesses looked on.

With both women on the ground the offender walked away.

The entire incident occurred in full view of other people on the street.

Police said the Queensland man, from Elanora, was charged with one count of common assault, two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and one count of affray.

He appeared in Byron Bay Local Court on November 1 and paid a $500 fine for the assault charge, and received a two-year good behaviour bond for the other charges.

Byron Bay is quickly building a reputation for alcohol-fuelled incidents, with a 20 per cent rise since 2009-10, according to NSW Police Association vice-president Pat Gooley, who is also the spokesman for Last Drinks - the call time on street crime coalition

"It's disgusting behaviour but it's not surprising," he said. "Byron Bay is one of the worst places in the state for alcohol-related violence."

He called for lockouts and restrictions on shots and heavy liquor to help curb the alcohol-related violence.s," he said. "That's been put in place in Newcastle and Manly and you've seen the statistics go down by about 37 per cent.

"That's 37 per cent of people with less injuries like brain injuries, fractured eye sockets and teeth knocked out."
