A MAN has been hit in the leg with an axe in southeast Queensland, police say.

The 46-year-old man from Pialba in Hervey Bay was struck with a small axe during a fight on Friday night, police say.

He was taken to Hervey Bay hospital for treatment of a serious wound to his right leg, but his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

A 33-year-old man from Hervey Bay has been charged with one count of unlawful wounding over the incident.

He is due to appear in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on Saturday.
