School loses two kids, teacher

PARENTS are protesting the removal of a teacher from a Sydney school after the number of enrolled students fell below a key benchmark.

The Education Department plans to redeploy the female teacher after two students left Eastern Creek Public School last week, dropping its entitlement to 11 classroom teachers.

A petition with 400 signatures of parents and teachers who oppose the decision was handed to Opposition Leader John Robertson yesterday.

P&C member Keith Darley said the staff member had been at the school for five years and was a valued member of the community.

The school has a history of enrolling five to 10 new students between March and July each year and parents want the decision suspended until mid-term enrolments.

"It will tear apart a class where some kids have learning disabilities and the teacher has worked very hard on getting their performances up," Mr Darley said.

Allocation of teaching staff in public schools is determined by a formula based on student enrolments. Henry Fulton Public School in Sydney's west has an additional classroom teacher this year after its enrolments rose by one student.

The Education Department said Eastern Creek Public School's teacher entitlement would be adjusted if enrolments rose during the year.

Education Minister Adrian Piccoli said, under the existing funding formula, a small increase or decrease in student numbers meant a school would gain or lose a teacher.

He said the government was in the process of redefining the way schools were funded to avoid this.
