WHO needs fur when you've got a toasty human to keep you warm at night?
Not these two kitties, whose bold, bald looks are set to star at this year's Royal Easter Show.
Hurley and Honey belong to the sphynx breed, known for their lack of coat and prune-like wrinkled skin, and will go on display as part of the show's new feline junior handler competition.
Kids have previously been able to enter their dogs in the show's junior competition, but Royal Agricultural Society of NSW domestic animals co-ordinator Deborah Harbin said demand was now sufficient to introduce a feline section.
"The junior handlers category is already a very strong competition in the dog section, and this is a way for children with cats to get involved with showing and learn more about their pets," she said.
Without a coat of fur to keep them warm, sphynx cats are more vulnerable than most to suffering in cold weather.
But Hurley and Honey's owners, brothers Kalani and Koa Diaz, help solve that problem by snuggling up to them at night.
"They're really affectionate," Koa, 11, said yesterday. "I like them because they don't have any fur and they're different. At first I thought they were just weird, but now I'm living with two of them I think they're the cutest animals ever."
Australian National Cats Inc president Brian Edwards said the junior handlers feline competition was more about the children, their presentation skills and confidence than the quality of their cat.
"They bring the cat up to a table and talk about the breed, its personality, grooming - that kind of thing," he said.
