POLICE have surrounded a house in Sydney's southwest and are negotiating with a man who is believed to be inside with an elderly woman.
The siege at Raby began about 7.20am this morning.
A police spokeswoman says people should avoid the area as police negotiators and Tactical Operations Unit officers resolve the situation.
"A man is believed to be inside a house with an elderly female,'' she told AAP.
Sopwith Avenue has been closed between Bristol Avenue and Corsair Street.
Police were called to a home in Bristol Ave, Raby, to conduct a "police operation''.
"We don't want people turning up in masses,'' she said.
A NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said paramedics were on standby.
"We have been told there is one female patient but there's been no transport and no update,'' she said.
Police have been at the property since 9am.
