A PORTRAIT of writer and former model Tara Moss has won the Packing Room prize, the prelude to the annual Archibald art prize.
The full-length portrait that celebrates Moss' physical presence and style by NSW Blue Mountains artist Mathew Lynn was selected according to tradition by NSW Art Gallery backroom staff.
Lynn has been a finalist in the Archibald prize 12 times previously, a runner-up twice and has also been voted People's Choice.
"This is my lucky 13 which Tara would love because she's a little bit spooky,'' Lynn says.
He also hopes the prize will help Moss's causes including the rights of women and children.
The 39 Archibald prize finalists also announced on Thursday has been culled from 868 entries.
The 2013 winner will be announced in Sydney next week.
