TWO Qantas passengers were hospitalised with dehydration yesterday after the temperature in the cabin of their aircraft soared to 40C due to a faulty airconditioning unit.
A QantasLink Dash 8 travelling from Sydney to Lord Howe Island was forced back "due to a technical issue with the airconditioning system", an airline spokeswoman said last night. After landing at 1.47pm, ambulance crews assessed about 30 passengers.
Qantas did not confirm the temperature, but said passengers and crew were being treated for heat exposure.
An ambulance spokesman said paramedics were called to the airport around 1.30pm after "reports the temperature inside was quite high".
A spokesman added two female passengers were treated at the scene for dehydration and transferred to hospital.
They were both in a stable condition last night.
A Sydney Airport spokeswoman refused to release details about the incident despite the airline confirming the aircraft had experienced technical problems with the airconditioning.
"I can confirm that there was a Qantas aircraft that landed," was all the spokeswoman would say.
