End of the road for this rainbow

SELFIES killed the rainbow crossing - and it will cost $30,000 to rip it up.

It caused no accidents but safety auditors found that people stopping to take photos on their mobile phone faced a "low" risk of being struck by cars on Oxford St.

Sydney City Council has had to apply to the RMS to close part of the street at Taylor Square to remove the crossing, bringing the one-month installation bill to $95,500, about $15,000 less than council budgeted.

Bitzios Consulting found pedestrians posing on the crossing when vehicles had right of way, "exacerbated by what appeared to be a large number of intoxicated people using the crossing" for photos, lying, sitting on the crossing, playing "stacks on" and skylarking.

Roads Minister Duncan Gay said he allowed the crossing to be installed in recognition of the 35th anniversary of the Mardi Gras on the condition it was removed after a month.

"CCTV cameras were installed and people were seen sitting and lying on the crossing, with cars waiting for them to move. This ... warrants removal of the markings," Mr Gay said.

Crossing artist Martin Duvander said ripping it up because it was a distraction was "baloney". "What you are telling me is a bit of paint is a safety issue. Near naked girls on a billboard is more dangerous," he said.

Last night Lord Mayor Clover Moore called an urgent meeting with Mr Gay after a petition to keep the crossing collected more than 15,000 signatures in a month.
