Plane vanishes with four onboard

THERE are fears for four people on board a light aircraft that was reported missing in bad weather in a remote part of the Top End late yesterday.

The Cessna 210 was last heard from over the sparsely populated area north of Wadeye, about 300km southwest of Darwin.

Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) last night sent out its Dornier fixed-wing aircraft from Darwin to conduct a night vision search of the land and sea in the area.

AMSA spokeswoman Jo Meehan said the flight was reported missing about 5pm (CST) yesterday.

The privately-owned plane was one of two flying from Bullo River Station, in the East Kimberley region about 800km southwest of Darwin - close to the Western Australian border - to a private air strip about 30km south of the Territory capital.

They left about 2pm and were due to arrive at 4pm. But when it had not reached the airstrip by 5pm, the pilot of the second plane reported it overdue to AMSA.

The plane was last heard from at 3pm (CST), about 25km north of Wadeye.
