Police hunt on after fatal stabbing

A MAN stabbed during an early morning fight desperately tried to walk to a local police station for help before collapsing and dying in the street.

A passer-by spotted the man collapsed at the intersection of Wollombi and Allandale Rds at Cessnock in the Hunter before alerting officers at the nearby police station just before 3am.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad are investigating reports the 21-year-old man was involved in a fight with another man before he was stabbed.

Officers said the injured man tried  to walk to the police station a few hundred metres away before collapsing.

Paramedics rushed the man to Cessnock Hospital but he could not be revived.

Investigators are this morning scouring the area for clues to the attack, with motorists advised to avoid Wollombi Road at the intersections of Allandale Road and Vincent Street or delay their trip.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
