SHOPPING addiction doesn't just happen to women. Meet the sports writer who has checked into rehab after admitting spending $600,000 in three years on clothes.
"Clothes maketh the man" the saying goes, but in the case of Buzz Bissinger perhaps it should be "clothes maketh the man lose all self-control".
The 58-year-old sports writer has checked into rehab after admitting spending $587,412.97 USD in three years on a shopping addiction.
In a confessional piece in GQ magazine, the Pulitzer-prize winning American journalist declared: "I own 81 leather jackets, 75 pairs of boots, 41 pairs of leather [trousers], 32 pairs of haute couture jeans, ten evening jackets and 115 pairs of gloves. I have an addiction?.?.?.?I am a shopaholic."
Bissinger was a fan of Burberry and Alexander McQueen - he bought some orange leather trousers and a jacket from the latter - but Gucci was his greatest love. He became one of the company's most valued clients, and was treated to all-expenses-paid trips to Milan and Florence.
"It's all part of the 'Mr Big' mentality, the waters parting when I walk into the New York store," said the sports journalist. "I hear reverent whispers of 'Mr Bissinger'."
Explaining his decision to go public, he said: "I believe [the article] will help others who are struggling with addiction. I wrote it because it was the only way I know of getting the help I am now getting."
Bissinger sold two million copies of Friday Night Lights, his acclaimed book about a Texas high school football team, which was subsequently made into a successful film and TV series.
