A SHOOTING at Fort Knox in Kentucky, int he US, has the entire Army post on lockdown.
The shooting occurred in the vicinity of the Humans Resources Command, which has 3,800 employees, Fox News reports.
There was no word on casualties or injuries.
Local TV station WDRB.com cited a Fort Knox spokesman who said the lockdown had been lifted just after 7pm local time (10am AEDT), but it has yet to be confirmed.
It is the second shooting at the army base in weeks.
In February, Specialist Christopher Meeks and Krista Meeks were found dead in a residence on the base in an apparent domestic dispute.
The latest shooting comes hours after President Barack Obama gave a speech in Colorado, scene of the Aurora cinema massacre in 2012.
Mr Obama, fighting to keep his gun law reforms alive, said many proud gun owners back sensible measures to stop an epidemic of firearms deaths.
The president argued that there was no contradiction between his plans to protect US citizens and a constitutionally guaranteed right to bear arms.
Fort Knox is home to more than 40,000 army personnel, staff, and family members. Fort Knox, Kentucky, is home to the United States Bullion Depository (aka Fort Knox), which holds a massive portion of the nation's gold reserves. It holds some 4,578 metric tons of gold, roughly 3 percent of the gold ever refined.
