Setting traps for illegal anglers

HMAS Adelaide

NSW Fisheries will continue to use covert surveillance to monitor illegal fishing within the 200m exclusion zone surrounding the ex-HMAS Adelaide artificial dive site.

The wreck off Avoca Beach on the Central Coast has become so successful in attracting not only small local reef species but prize game fish such as silver trevally, yellowtail kingfish and snapper it has become a favourite spot for recreational anglers fishing illegally at night.

NSW Fisheries senior officer Chris Clarke confirmed reports of illegal fishing had been lodged with Fish-eries but said the true extent of the problem was not known.

"Over the last 12 months we have done (covert) surveillance and we will be continuing that. I don't doubt it's happening but as to what level, that's another question," he said.

The location of the dive site, about 1500m offshore at a depth of about 32m, is clearly marked with a buoy and small light, which divers allege makes it an easy target for recreational anglers looking for a quick catch.

Mr Clarke said recreational anglers faced a $500 on-the-spot fine if caught fishing or even in possession of gear within the exclusion zone.

The cop, lumberjack and the forklift

Forklift

A female member of the NSW Mounted Police Force is allegedly the mystery passenger on board a forklift in a late night drunken rampage at Australia?s agricultural showcase, the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

NSW Police confirmed tonight the woman officer is being investigated as being the passenger who fled the scene after she and a woodchopper took an alcohol-fuelled joyride on the forklift, crashing through show pavilions.

The man, who was three times over the legal drinking limit, was arrested at the scene. The woman was the subject of a statewide search and her identity had remained unknown – even to the most senior police.

The female police officer, who reportedly later fled the scene after her companion was caught, is a member of the world’s oldest mounted police force.

The NSW Mounted Police annually performs the musical ride at the Easter Show, a “much loved” display of precision movements acted in time with the NSW Police Band

The drunken rampage began at around 1 am on Sunday, March 31, when the 27-year-old Queensland man and the woman allegedly took control of an onsite forklift.

A security guard spotted them driving down an avenue of the showgrounds, formerly the 2000 Sydney Olympics site, and called for them to stop, but the forklift accelerated away and crashed into steel bollards.

The guard jumped onto the forklift and removed the keys from the ignition.

The driver took off through nearby pavilions and alleyways, but was caught by the guard after a short chase.

The woman fled. Police took the driver, who is from Marian in Queensland, to a Sydney police station where he returned a breath-test reading of 0.170.

A NSW Police spokeswoman told news.com.au a “woman who is a member of a special police unit is under investigation as to the extent of her involvement” in the crime.

The NSW Mounted Police Unit’s annual display at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, according to the NSW Police website, "has received acclaim from many overseas visitors and is considered to be one of the most spectacular rides in the world”.

Warlord Kony may be freeing sex slaves

Kony

African warlord Joseph Kony, the head of the Lord's Resistance Army.

FUGITIVE African warlord Joseph Kony's Resistance Army may be jettisoning women and children in a desperate bid to keep his weakened group lean and mobile, an expert says.

Kasper Agger of the Kony watchdog group Enough Project said the release late last month of 28 people the LRA abducted in the Congo also suggests the group is undergoing turmoil amid a manhunt - supported by US military advisers - for its leaders.

He said Kony possibly is freeing women to punish commanders of doubtful loyalty.

The LRA is notorious for recruiting girls who become sex slaves.

Three of the abductees freed by the LRA said on Friday they were made to believe Kony himself gave the order.

President's mic picks up 'old hag' slur

POPE Francis Cristina Kirchner

URUGUAY'S President Jose Mujica had no apologies Friday after disparaging remarks aimed at Argentine counterpart Cristina Kirchner and her late husband were picked up by an open microphone.

In a radio presentation, Mr Mujica talked about the close links between the two countries, and emphasised that no event or person "can uproot our common history".

Mr Mujica made no reference to his remarks broadcast live on Thursday at the start of a news conference while he was speaking privately with another official.

"This old hag is worse than the one-eyed guy," Mr Mujica was caught saying, without realising that the microphones were on.

It was a clear reference to Mrs Kirchner and her late husband, former president Nestor Kirchner, who had a lazy eye and was nicknamed "El Tuerto" (the one-eyed guy).

"'El Tuerto' was more of a politician, this one is stubborn," Mr Mujica said.

He also had a catty comment on Mrs Kirchner's gift to Pope Francis: "To an Argentine Pope, who has lived for 77 years, are you going to explain to him what...mate and a flask are?"

The reference was to Mrs Kirchner's gift a gourd to drink mate, the herbal infusion popular in the Argentina and Uruguay, to the newly elected Pope.

Word of Mr Mujica's slip-up shut down the website of Uruguay's El Observador newspaper, which recorded historic traffic, according to the outlet's digital content manager. The audio had also been broadcast live on the president's official website.

One hour after his remarks Mr Mujica told the online edition of another newspaper, La Republica, that he had been talking about Lula and Brazil, and that he had not spoken "publicly" about Argentina.

"I'm not going to play ball with them or go around the world clarifying anything. They can invent all the nonsense that they want," Mr Mujica snapped.

The comments, however, went viral on social media.

Argentine Foreign Minister Hector Timerman on Thursday slammed the remarks as "unacceptable" and "denigrating," adding that they offended the memory of the deceased.

An official protest was delivered in the form of a note to Uruguay's ambassador to Argentina, Guillermo Pomi.

Nestor Kirchner was Argentina's president from 2003 to 2007. His wife, Cristina, succeeded him and won re-election in 2011. Nestor Kirchner was a key adviser to his wife up to his sudden death of a heart attack in 2010.

Mr Mujica, 77, is a former guerrilla who took office in 2010.

WHILE you were sleeping, North Korea again managed to hold off on destroying the world and a British social worker admitted she was lying when she 'killed off' her family members one by one to take extra sick days.

The situation in North Korea continued to escalate, with the rogue state loading two missile launchers and warning Russia and the UK to evacuate their embassies. The flap prompted Cuba’s Fidel Castro to break his nine-month silence and urge ally N Korea to calm down. And if that wasn’t earth-shattering enough, Russia was rattled by a 6.2-magnitude quake near the border with N Korea.

In the UK, a social worker lost her job after confessing she made up the deaths of father, mother, uncle, aunt, brother and ex-husband so she could get time off for their fake funerals. In South Africa, Nelson Mandela is feeling better, and in the US a white supremacist has been arrested for killing a US prisons chief. Also, the University of Colorado has said Batman shooter James Holmes was blocked from campus because he wasn't attending classes -but a campus officer says its because his shrink labelled Holmes a threat.

And in Africa, infamous warlord Joseph Kony has punished his officers by setting free their sex slaves (many of them kidnapped young girls) amid reports a $US5 million ($4.8 million) bounty on his head has caused chaos amid the ranks.

KFC-Going Boneless

Hillary Clinton may or may not be running for president as she says women’s rights are the last "unfinished business" of the 21st century, KFC announced that after years of research they’ve perfected ‘boneless chicken’, and an ex-inmate who kept breaking back into prison because he missed the "nice" prisoners may get his wish and be locked up again.
