LUCY Jones is on a mission to help save the children she says have been forgotten and ignored by the pharmaceutical giants.

Those like her little girl Sienna Hoffmann, who was just nine months old when she was diagnosed with neuroblastoma - a rare and deadly cancer which affects an estimated 50 children in Australia every year.

Sienna lost her life in 2010 but in dedication of her memory, Lucy has raised more than $550,000 to help fund Australian research which may potentially discover how to prevent this devastating childhood cancer.

"Because it's a so-called rare cancer (neuroblastoma) doesn't attract much attention from corporates or any research dollars from the pharmaceutical companies," Ms Jones.

Every cent Lucy has raised has been donated by "everyday people" in response to her tireless doorknock appeals, direct marketing letters and fundraising dinners.

Lucy vows she will not stop until that dream is realised

Tonight (Thursday) Channel 9's Peter Overton and Jaynie Seal will co-host Lucy's fourth annual fundraiser - Sienna's Annual Frangipani Gala Dinner at Chowder Bay.

Lucy vows she will not stop fundraising until that dream is realised.

Neuroblastoma is a highly aggressive cancer which begins as a tumour in the abdomen and has a survival rate of 50 per cent.

The treatment used to fight the disease involves chemotherapy and radiotherapy which is invasive, highly toxic and a traumatising experience for a child and parents.

"Society hasn't done enough to prevent this happening to little children who don't have a voice," Ms Jones said.

"The situation has gone unnoticed for far too long.

"There is huge potential to change the situation because the disease can be prevented so children wont need to suffer through these nasty, devastating treatments."

A team of researchers at the world-renowned, Children's Cancer Institute Australia recently made an enormous discovery - identifying how neuroblastoma forms in the first place.

The CCIAs Professor Glenn Marshall says the team's study focuses on a gene, called Bmi1, which causes excess cells to survive after birth and can later transform into neuroblastoma.

"We have found that Bmi1 is "switching off" the body's natural cancer barrier, a protein called p53, leaving healthy cells susceptible," Prof Marshall said.

"From here, we plan to look at two things: developing a blood test at birth that can detect if these cells are present in the baby; and finding drugs that can "switch on" the p53 protein, or reactivate the cancer barrier.

"Although there is a lot more work to be done, this is the first step in what could be an extremely rewarding breakthrough for childhood cancer."

Harry Wethersby Stamps

  • Penchant for buttermilk served in martini glasses
  • Hated Day Light Saving - died on day clocks went forward

AN OBITUARY notice written by a man's daughter has gone viral and lauded as the best ever tribute to a dead person.

Amanda Lewis' obituary about her dad, Harry Weathersby Stamps, who died on Saturday, appeared in Mississippi's Sun Herald.

Stamps, of Long Beach, Mississippi, only sported T-shirts designed by "fashion house Fruit of the Loom" and had a penchant for buttermilk served in martini glasses.

He "particularly hated Day Light Saving Time, which he referred to as The Devil's Time. It is not lost on his family that he died the very day that he would have had to spring his clock forward. This can only be viewed as his final protest," the obituary read.

"I am still in a state of stupor over all this attention!" his "main squeeze" Ann Stamps, 73 told NBCNews.

"In a few days, all of this is going to be over, and I think I'm going to really, really hit bottom."

MKR mum: I'm not embarrassed by my daughter

sophia pou

HER daughter has been savaged for her rude table manners but the mum of My Kitchen Rules contestant Sophia Pou took a bite out of the critics, saying she couldn't be any prouder.

"It's not that Sophia is mean, she is very straightforward if she doesn't like something she will say it and she is very strong on her opinions,'' Sophone Pou, 61, said.

She defended Sophia and fellow cook Ashlee Pham after MKR gatecrashers Angela and Melina last week said Pou's mother would be ashamed of her behaviour at the dinner table.

Mrs Pou said: "I am not embarrassed of my daughter. The people that know Sophia, like her very much. To those people that criticise her I would say: 'Be quiet'.''

Pou, who came to Australia in 1980 with her husband Savath, has watched as the pair has been branded disrespectful and rude.

The Pous came to Australia to escape the civil war in Cambodia.

Sophone also spoke out against suggestions her daughter was being portrayed in a negative light because of her race, dismissing it as nonsense.

"I am not concerned about the way the girls are being portrayed. It is a true depiction,'' she says.

"It's just not something that I think about.

"Sophia is not a representation of her entire race, neither is Ashlee of every Vietnamese person out there. They are two people who are strong in character and opinion.

"Sophia is very much like her father. All I see is that she is her father's daughter. Race doesn't come into play.''

Pou herself says she doesn't feel she is a victim: "For me the claims and allegations being thrown around have no merit. I absolutely consider myself Australian.

"We were both born and bred here.''

The Channel 7 show has been trumping its competitors, pulling in more than 1.7 million viewers every episode.

Family fears daughter killed in blast

A huge fire has injured 14 people after a car crashed into a gas main in Kansas, USA. Courtesy: Fox News.

A GAS explosion that sparked a massive, block-engulfing blaze in an upscale Kansas City shopping district injured 14 people, a city official said, adding that it is believed that an accident involving a utility contractor may have caused the blast.

Firefighters have contained the fire ignited by a huge gas explosion on Tuesday night (Wednesday morning Australia time) which ''critically injured'' bystanders.

An official says 14 people have been confirmed as injured in the massive gas explosion.

Kansas City Manager Troy Schulte said officials don't yet know if anyone was killed in the explosion, which destroyed a restaurant.

Authorities also are still trying to determine the full cause of the blast.

Mr Schulte said they do know there was a gas leak followed by an explosion.

At this point, he said authorities believe it may have stemmed from an accident involving a utility contractor.

Earlier police spokeswoman Rhonda Flores said it appeared that a car crashed into a gas main near JJ's just after 6pm.

The area was also undergoing construction work.

A JJ's worker said the restaurant was being renovated at the time.

The restaurant is reported to have been "levelled".

Flores said an initial call for three ambulances had been increased to 10.

Flores said the car crash appeared to have been accidental.

Police Sgt Tony Sanders said said the manager of JJ's restaurant, which was destroyed in the blaze, was unable to account for three people, but it was unclear whether they were caught in the blaze or had left earlier.

KMBC 9's Micheal Mahoney spoke to someone who said he was a regular at the restaurant and said firefighters and representatives from Missouri Gas Energy were checking for the source of a gas odor before the explosion.

A small group of customers who were in the restaurant were advised to leave.

He said five to 10 employees stayed behind after the customers left, but it wasn't clear if they were still inside at the time of the explosion.

Video showed dozens of firefighters and other emergency responders battling the massive blaze that appeared to have engulfed an entire block, with flames burning through the roofs.

Footage showed flames shooting out of the Country Club Plaza.

Black smoke swirled in the air and debris littered surrounding streets.

The smell of gas was very strong near the area long after the suspected explosion.

Witnesses described smelling gas before they heard the explosion and saw debris being flung up to 50m into the air.

"I actually sped up to get out of this area because it made me nervous about what the smell was and what would happen," she said.

The University of Kansas Hospital was treating five people injured in the blast, said spokesman Bob Hallinan.

He said one person was in critical condition, two were in serious condition and two others were expected to be released.

He said all the injuries were traumatic, such as broken bones, rather than burns or smoke inhalation.

Kerry O'Connor, a spokeswoman for St Luke's Hospital, which is near the scene of the fire, said several patients were sent to the hospital.

She said they haven't been assessed yet but ''they appear to be critical at this time.''

Extra staff have been called up.

Kansas City Mayor Sly James urged people on Twitter to stay away from the area so firefighters can do their work.

Firefighters warned of further explosions.

While the surrounding fires have reportedly been contained, the ruptured gas main continues to burn.

J.J.'s Restaurant has issued the following statement on its Facebook page: "Please keep our friends and families in your hearts and prayers. At this time we are still trying to assess the situation and make sure our coworkers and customers are safe."

Jim Ligon, a bartender who has worked at JJ's restaurant for five years, wasn't working at the time but said he started getting texts and calls from co-workers minutes after the explosion.

He said the incident happened during the peak of weekday happy hour, when there is typically anywhere from 15 to 45 people in the bar area as well as three to five tables of diners at the restaurant.

''JJ's has a small staff, a family feel,'' said Ligon, 45, of Kansas City, Missouri.

''You see the same 100 people all the time - a bar and restaurant for regulars. We're just really hoping we come out of it.''

The shopping area was established in 1922 by J.C. Nichols.

Based on the architecture of Seville, Spain, it includes retail, restaurants, apartments and offices.
